Wings’ Hickey Steps Down

St. John’s Red Wings’ GM Barry Hickey steps down;

Gates Imbeau from to be hired as replacement

September 13th, 2011

Over this past weekend, the AFHL Commissioner received the following email from St. John’s Red Wings’ GM Barry Hickey:

This is a very sad day for me, but today I have to resign from my post as the GM of the St. John’s Red Wings. Recently I have had some major things happen in my personal life which has led me to not have enough time to put a proper effort into building a contending team and I apologize for that. It was very difficult to reach this decision but right now I have no personal time for fantasy hockey. You have always been a great GM and Commissioner and I will miss competing against you and all the other GM’s in the league. I wish you and everyone else in the league all of the best in the future and thanks for your understanding.

In a statement on Tuesday, the AFHL Commissioner said the torch will be handed to Gates Imbeau, a writer for who goes by the handle ‘GMGates’. Imbeau will be formally introduced as the new Red Wings’ GM at a news conference tomorrow morning.

“The decision to hire Imbeau as Hickey’s replacement was based on Imbeau’s wealth of experience, credibility, and passion for hockey,” said Commissioner Furino. “Obviously it’s sad to see Hickey go, but Gates plans to use his knowledge in order to move this team forward based on what he knows about the game, how to grow a team, how to grow an individual, how to grow a champion.”

In a telephone call with a reporter on Tuesday morning, Imbeau said he’s confident he can lead the Wings to an AFHL Stanley Cup, but first he will need to make some changes to the current roster.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity and I can’t wait to get started,” said Imbeau. “This team that I’m taking over is not something that’s broke, it just needs to be tweaked a little bit. The team that wins the Stanley Cup is the team that makes good hockey decisions. I’m going to make sure I have the right players in the right spot. That being said, I’m looking forward to bringing my personality to the AFHL and enjoying what really is the most Amazing Fantasy Hockey League.”

Imbeau has yet to make public what the new team name will be or where the team will be re-located, but an announcement is expected to be made sometime later in the week.

    After coming along this league from a recent DobberHockey article, and a plug by Commish Furino, I knew this league meant business. With a rich foundation and dedicated GMs, I couldn’t ask for a better opportunity to branch out, meet new fantasy hockey enthusiasts and have a good time.

    I am really looking forward to stepping in and taking over a well built squad. I hope to make Barry proud, and show this team to victory.
