Trevor Romanzi Takes Over Ice Dogs

The winds of change are howling across the AFHL.

In one of the biggest organizational shakeups of the 2026 offseason, Trevor Romanzi has officially been hired as the new GM/Coach of the former Long Beach Ice Dogs – and he wasted absolutely no time putting his fingerprints on the franchise.

The Ice Dogs are no more… Welcome to the AFHL, the WESTCHESTER WOLVES. 

Romanzi was introduced Friday afternoon at a packed introductory press conference, unveiling the new identity and laying out his vision for a franchise that suddenly feels like one of the more intriguing wild cards heading into the 2026 AFHL Entry Draft.

“I’m incredibly excited,” Romanzi said. “This is a tremendous opportunity. We’ve got some really good pieces here already, and now it’s about putting our stamp on this team and building something that can compete for a championship.”

Romanzi inherits a club that finished squarely in the middle of the AFHL pack – not a rebuilding disaster, but certainly not a finished product either.

And that may be exactly what makes this job so interesting.

A NEW PACK IN WESTCHESTER

There is legitimate star power already on the roster.

Sebastian Aho gives Westchester an elite centerpiece down the middle, while sniper Cole Caufield provides the type of game-breaking goal-scoring ability every contender needs.

Then there’s the man between the pipes.

Young goaltender Lukas Dostal could prove to be one of the most important pieces of the entire organization. With his best hockey potentially still ahead of him, Dostal gives Romanzi something every new GM would love to inherit: a potential long-term answer in net.

Romanzi made it clear Friday that he isn’t walking into Westchester looking to tear everything apart.

He’s looking to build.

“You look at Aho, you look at Caufield, you look at a young goalie like Dostal – there’s a foundation here,” Romanzi said. “My job is to build around that foundation. We’re going to be aggressive when it makes sense, we’re going to be patient when it makes sense, and we’re going to look under every rock for ways to improve this roster.”

And then came the quote that should have the rest of the AFHL paying attention:

“We’re not here just to participate. Eventually, we want to win the whole damn thing.”

Message received.

ALL EYES ON ROMANZI’S FIRST DRAFT

Romanzi won’t have much time to settle into his new office.

His first major test comes almost immediately.

The 2026 AFHL Entry Draft begins Monday at 8AM EST, giving the new Wolves GM just one weekend to finalize his draft board, evaluate trade possibilities and decide exactly what direction he wants to take his new franchise.

“I’ve been waiting for Monday,” Romanzi said with a smile. “The draft is where you start shaping the future of your organization. We’re doing our homework. We’re talking. We’re preparing. When we’re on the clock, we’ll be ready.”

Welcome to the league, Trevor.

AROUND THE LEAGUE: AFHL REBRANDING FRENZY

Romanzi isn’t the only GM giving his franchise a facelift this offseason.

While the men running the organizations remain the same, three other AFHL franchises have officially undergone name changes ahead of the 2026 season.

And with the draft just days away, it appears several front offices have decided that a new season deserves a new identity.

LONDON MUSTANGS ➡️

LONDON MARAUDERS

Perhaps no team enters draft weekend with more reason for optimism than GM Matt Plachta’s newly renamed London Marauders.

The former London Mustangs have officially adopted the Marauders identity — and they’ll christen their new era with the most valuable asset on the board:

THE NO. 1 OVERALL PICK.

Plachta appeared energized while discussing the change at the team’s rebranding press conference.

“It just felt like the right time,” Plachta said. “New name. New identity. New season. And obviously having the first overall pick gives us an incredible opportunity to start this chapter with a bang.”

Asked whether the organization had already decided who would hear his name called first Monday morning, Plachta smiled.

“We’ve got a pretty good idea what we’re doing. But I’m not giving the rest of these guys a head start.”

GM Ken Quan is also packing his bags for Victoria.

The former Sarnia Sting have officially been renamed the Victoria Cougars, giving the AFHL another new identity heading into 2026.

Quan described the move as the beginning of a new chapter for the organization.

“Sometimes a franchise needs a fresh coat of paint,” Quan said. “We’re proud of what we built in Sarnia, but we’re looking forward now. The Victoria Cougars are going to have their own identity, their own attitude and, hopefully, their own championship history.”

Quan also hinted that the makeover might not stop with the logo.

“Nobody should assume we’re bringing the exact same roster into the season,” he said. “We’re looking at everything.”

BOSTON GIANTS ➡️

MONTAUK WHALERS

And all the way out at the eastern edge of Long Island, GM Mike Phelan has taken his franchise in an entirely new direction.

Goodbye, Boston Giants.

Hello, MONTAUK WHALERS. 

Phelan unveiled the new name this week and said he wanted an identity that felt completely different from the franchise’s previous chapter.

“Montauk has character,” Phelan said. “It’s tough, it’s unique, it’s out there on the edge. That’s what we want this team to be.”

When asked what AFHL opponents should expect from the Whalers this season, Phelan didn’t hesitate.

“Hopefully a miserable night every time they see Montauk on the schedule.”

Phelan laughed before adding:

“We’ve got work to do. But we’re excited about the direction we’re heading, and the draft is going to be a big part of it.”

The Whalers are officially open for business.
